window of opportunity

Teacher growth and development has always been a necessary component of the teaching profession. Recent laws, especially the No Child Left Behind Act, have made it increasingly important for teachers to take classes and focus on professional growth to meet criteria outlined in current laws and state guidelines.

In past years, many teachers were denied credit for courses taken at various institutions based on school district's interpretation of relevance or quality of instruction. Many more teachers needed to appeal in order to have hours accepted.

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) will eliminate possibilities of denial, since all program areas will be approved, and in many cases created by the district.

The district has also focused its attention in recent years on attempting to guide teachers into program areas that CCSD believes to be meaningful and important to advance education in Clark County. Some of these programs have only had minimal success, due to the lack of teacher participation, because of the absence of incentives associated with taking these programs.

The Advanced Studies Certification comes with a $3,000 salary increase which guarantees tens of thousands of dollars in additional income for teachers throughout their careers and into retirement.
